If a person wants to get self-realization or have a spiritual awakening, there are major factors that a person needs to take into consideration. The initial step of spiritual awakening is a person realizing through awareness that they are conscious and immerse themselves in that experience. Although it is good for a person to have an intellectual understanding that they are conscious, that in itself will not make a person have a spiritual awakening. A person first needs to realize through an inquiry of their self or witness conscious that they are conscious of itself.

In the practice of self-inquiry, a person keeps turning their attention back upon itself. A person may silently ask who they are or what is the meaning of consciousness to assist in bringing the attention of a person back to what is here before the thought and then feel that. At first, a person can only experience themselves as conscious for some seconds before getting caught up in thinking again but through practice, a person will be able to experience themselves as awareness more and more.

In witnessing, a person simply allows thoughts to come but a person witnesses them instead of identifying with them. A person first does this by allowing thoughts to come and go. A person consciously relinquishes the thoughts as they come up. A person does not push them away, a person passively does not hold on to thoughts. Then, a person will get to a point where they notice thoughts come up ad disappear by themselves as a person rests in a state that is pure of awareness itself. A person is aware of thinking about what is happening but still, the person is not involved.

The second factor of having spiritual awakening has to do with spiritual energy which most people refer to it as grace. It is the energy of consciousness that is pure and it is conscious in the form of energy. This second factor has the full intelligence of transforming and awakening a person into enlightening. A person can actually feel it as a vibration, love, peace or energy that is nurturing.
